How can you use generative AI to boost your job applications?

Job hunting can be a long and tedious process. You may have to send in dozens of applications and go through a series of interviews before you receive an offer that really matches your expectations.

Fortunately, technological advances are introducing new tools that can help candidates save time and stand out from the crowd. Some of these new tools are based on generative artificial intelligence (AI), and are becoming increasingly popular.

In this article, we show you how to use the tools based on this innovative technology to boost your applications and improve your chances of getting the job of your dreams.

How generative AI can help candidates stand out in the job market

What is generative AI?

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that uses algorithms to

create new content, such as images, texts or even sounds. How does it work? AI analyzes existing content to learn how to generate new content.

The benchmark in generative artificial intelligence is undoubtedly ChatGPT, the conversational robot created by Californian start-up OpenAI. It is capable of producing text in response to an infinite number of "prompts". You've probably heard of it!

But ChatGPT is far from being the only tool based on generative artificial intelligence. Midjourney and Dall-E, for example, can be used to create images, while Amper Music can generate music tracks, and Genmo can create videos in a totally automated way.

There are also numerous tools dedicated to specific sectors such as recruitment, some of which, as we shall see, are aimed at candidates.

Generative AI and job search: concrete use cases

How can generative AI help candidates in their job search? Here's a non-exhaustive list of tasks that can be automated or optimized with the help of AI-based tools, when looking for a new position:

  • Analyze a job offer: you can use AI to identify the most relevant keywords or compare your CV with the profile sought, to assess your chances of success.
  • Getting in touch with a recruiter: generative intelligence tools can help you write emails that are both professional and personalized.
  • Optimize your CV: there are many tools you can use to create CVs that attract the attention of employers, highlighting your skills and achievements that are most relevant to the job in question.
  • How to write a cover letter: several tools are available to help you write letters in an appropriate style, taking into account the key elements of the job offer. All the while reflecting your personality.
  • Prepare for an interview: you can use AI to find out more about the company you're applying to, or to prepare yourself for the classic questions specific to a given position.

A quick aside: if you're looking for a job in technology or digital, Excelsior can help you find the position that matches your aspirations. Even better than artificial intelligence!

One last one for the road : Interview warmup. This Google-developed tool helps you prepare for job interviews. How does it work? You answer a series of questions by recording your voice, and the tool analyzes your answers to help you improve them. It doesn't 100% belong in our selection because it's based on non-generative AI, but we wanted to share it with you anyway!

The limits of generative AI in job search

So, in the end, generative artificial intelligence is an incredible technology that can offer considerable advantages to candidates in their job search. But like any technology, it has its limits.

While AI-based tools can help create professional-quality content, there's no substitute for human expertise when it comes to writing CVs and cover letters, or preparing for job interviews. Generative AI, on the other hand, is based on machine learning models that draw on existing data. If this data is biased or incomplete, generative AI can reproduce these biases in the content it generates.

As a candidate, you can't rely 100% on these tools to land your ideal job! At least not yet. So you need to spend time understanding employers' expectations and tailoring your applications to your skills and past experience.

In conclusion, while generative AI can be a valuable tool in your job search, it is not a miracle solution. It can't apply or interview for you!
